The Fall That Started It All

If someone had told me that one ordinary afternoon—and one very unfortunate fall—would eventually lead to an entirely new chapter of my life, I would have smiled politely and told them they were crazy.

At the time, all I knew was that my arm hurt. Really hurt. I had taken a tumble down a set of stairs at my house, fracturing my humerus and damaging my rotator cuff. All I could think about was the pain.

I certainly wasn't thinking about developing a website. I wasn't thinking about writing. I certainly wasn't thinking about creating a community centered around healthy living after fifty.

I was thinking, "Well...this isn't how I envisioned the next six months of to be like." The fall resulted in a severely fractured arm that required surgery. Suddenly, I found myself wearing a sling and learning just how many everyday tasks require two hands. Buttoning a shirt became an accomplishment. Washing my hair turned into a strategy session. Even pouring a cup of coffee felt like a small victory.

For a little while, it seemed as though life had pressed the pause button. But something unexpected started to happen. As my body slowed down, my mind sped up. Ideas that had been quietly sitting in the background for years suddenly demanded my attention. Questions I'd been asking myself about health, aging, purpose, and the kind of life I wanted to build became impossible to ignore.

Instead of wondering how quickly I could get back to normal, I found myself asking a different question. What if this interruption was actually an invitation?

Long before Jennifer Maier Living existed, I had already begun changing my own life. Under my doctor's supervision, I'd lost more than thirty pounds. But somewhere during that journey, I realized I wasn't simply trying to lose weight anymore. I was trying to learn how to live well.

I became fascinated by nutrition, healthy aging, walking, strength, sleep, and the small daily habits that quietly shape our lives. I wasn't looking for another diet. I was looking for a lifestyle I could imagine loving for the next thirty years.

From this thought process blossomed the idea of building Jennifer Maier Living. Since typing with one arm wasn't exactly practical, I started talking into my phone instead. I'd finish a walk around my property with an idea bouncing around in my head and I would dictate it before I forgot it.

Sometimes those thoughts became journal entries. Sometimes they became conversations with ChatGPT. Eventually, they became blog posts. Little by little, Jennifer Maier Living began to take shape. I'm here because I'm still walking. I landed in the middle of the life I was meant to build.
