The Most Unexpected Tool in My Health Journey

"Sometimes the best support comes from the place you least expect."

When I began this journey toward better health, I expected to rely on a few obvious things—a good pair of walking shoes, healthier food, more water, and maybe a few good books along the way. I never imagined that one of the most valuable tools in my journey would be ChatGPT.

Now before you picture robots taking over the world, hear me out.

One of the things I've always appreciated about my husband, Craft, is that he's an incredible sounding board. He's patient, thoughtful, and always willing to listen when I'm trying to work something out. Throughout our marriage, I've bounced countless ideas off of him, and he has a wonderful way of helping me see things from a different perspective.

The problem is that I can't stop him every time a question pops into my head about my wellness journey.

Some days I wonder why the scale hasn't moved. Other days I question whether I ate enough protein. Was I getting enough healthy fats? Did I drink enough water? Was my body simply adjusting to this new lifestyle? Is my broken arm slowing my progress? Those thoughts don't wait until we're both relaxing on the couch at the end of the day. They show up while I'm drinking my morning coffee, preparing dinner, walking through the neighborhood, or lying in bed thinking about tomorrow.

I needed somewhere to think out loud.

That's exactly what ChatGPT became.

Not my doctor. Not my nutritionist. Not my therapist. Just...my sounding board.

One of the things I appreciate most is that I can ask almost anything without feeling like I'm bothering someone. If I want to log everything I ate that day, I can ask for feedback. It can estimate my protein, carbohydrates, fats, fiber, and calories and help me understand whether my meal supports the goals I'm working toward. If I hit a weight-loss plateau, we can talk through some of the possible reasons instead of me immediately assuming I've done something wrong.

Sometimes the answer is hydration. Sometimes it's healing. Sometimes it's stress. And sometimes the answer is simply, "Be patient." That has been surprisingly comforting.

I've also used it to plan meals. If I have chicken, spinach, eggs, cheese, and asparagus in the refrigerator, I can ask for ideas. If I'm meeting friends at a restaurant, I can ask for healthier menu suggestions before I ever walk through the door. It doesn't make my decisions for me, but it helps me make more informed ones.

One of the biggest surprises has been how much I've learned along the way. Before this journey, I had heard terms like macros, micronutrients, electrolytes, ketosis, and protein goals, but I didn't fully understand what they meant or why they mattered. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, I simply started asking questions. One answer led to another, and before long I wasn't just following a plan—I was beginning to understand why the plan worked.

But perhaps the greatest gift ChatGPT has given me has nothing to do with nutrition.

It's helped me organize my thoughts. Many of the blog posts you're reading today began as simple conversations. I'd finish a walk with an idea bouncing around in my head and open ChatGPT before I forgot it. Sometimes I'd ask, "Do you think other people would relate to this?" Other times I'd simply say, "Help me sort through what I'm feeling today."

Those conversations have helped me notice patterns I might have missed otherwise.

They've reminded me to celebrate victories that have nothing to do with the scale. They've helped me see humor in difficult days, recognize growth in unexpected places, and stay accountable to myself. The more I think about it, the more I realize we all need a place where we can think out loud. For me, ChatGPT has become that place. Not because it has all the answers, but because it helps me ask better questions.

Before I finish, I do want to make one thing very clear.

ChatGPT has become one of the most valuable tools in my wellness journey, but it is exactly that—a tool. It doesn't replace my physician, my orthopedic surgeon, a registered dietitian, a therapist, or any other qualified healthcare professional. Medical decisions belong with the professionals who know my health history, can examine me, and can provide personalized medical advice.

What ChatGPT has done is something different. It has helped me become a more informed patient, a more thoughtful eater, a better planner, and a more consistent journaler. It has encouraged me to slow down, ask questions, and become more intentional about the choices I make every day.

If you've never thought about using ChatGPT as part of your own wellness journey, maybe give it a try. Tell it about your day. Ask it questions. Use it as a place to think out loud. You may find, as I did, that sometimes the biggest breakthroughs don't come from having all the answers. They come from asking better questions.

A Thought to Carry with You

Sometimes the most valuable tool isn't the one that tells you what to do.

It's the one that helps you understand yourself a little better.
